In 1999 a certain Dutchman, Andrea Van Den Brink, came to Chantonnay to suggest his home country’s way of hiking : walk at least 20km on at least two consecutive days and join  the major organisation the International Marching League (I.M.L.).

The elected officials of the time consulted and asked people potentially interested in the idea and especially those prepared to establish a management structure.

« The 4 days Walking Association Chantonnay » (R4JCV) was thus born in July 1999. Comprising one representative from each sporting association of the town, it decided to take the maximum number of days (4) and the maximum distance (42 km). We know the ability of the Vendéens and Chantonnaisiens to roll up their sleeves, find trails, sponsors and set up the organisation.

We can not claim that the first year was a success : only 550 walkers on 4 days ! But not at all  discouraged, even when cowardly abandoned by its instigator, the association continued its work : 3 years of operation were required to qualify for joining the I.M.L. This was done in Blankenberge (Belgium) in May 2003 for acceptance and entry into the organisation in March 2004 in Rotorua (New Zealand).

The result has been  impressive : immediately up to 600 foreigners gathered at Chantonnay for the walking but also to visit, eat and sleep for 4 days. The Chantonnaisiens have taken to this concept so well that in 2010, 10 years later, the R4JCV was proud of its 3 500 walkers and the 12th edition in 2011 was also a success.

It’s party time in Chantonnay, it’s the inauguration on Wednesday, it’s the night walk on Friday evening, it is the entertainment, bands and orchestras, it’s 300 volunteers in yellow T-shirt who take pleasure in meeting every year.
